The end of 2009 and beginning of 2010, the national economy caught up with Montana. While we typically avoid the peaks and valleys of economic swings and remain relatively flat and steady, it doesn't mean we haven't felt the lingering effects of the ongoing recession. In the past year, state revenue projections have plummeted. Locally, the city of Helena faces a $650,000 shortfall which led to the elimination of one police officer and one firefighter position.
Our airport, Helena Regional Airport, has seen a 20% increase in the number of travelers flying out of Helena in the last year.
After nearly a decade of stability, the Helena hospitality scene is burgeoning again. Three new properties are poised to bring more than 250 additional rooms to the local inventory. Coming soon to Helena, Residence Inn by Marriott, a 91 room, all-suite property. Comfort Suites hotel, will bring 90 more suites to the local inventory and Holiday Inn Express is under construction behind the new Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant.
